And…. They’re Off!

SteadmanDerbyToday is the 139th Run for the Roses, or what the tourists like to call the Kentucky Derby. In honor of this crown jewel of the Sport of Kings, we offer up Louisville’s own Hunter S. Thompson’s famous trip to Churchill Downs: The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved. Additionally, here’s NPR’s behind-the-scenes story of Thompson and illustrator Ralph Steadman’s weekend in Da’ Ville. Read it while you’re filling out your exacta box. Enjoy!

UPDATE: And the winner is… Orb! Taking the first leg of the Triple Crown by two and a half lengths in a very, very respectable time of 2:02:89 (for a sloppy track), the Florida Derby champion and 5-1 Derby favorite is coached by legendary trainer ‘Shug’ MacGaughey, III, who won his first derby. Jockey Joel Rosario took the mount and also notched his first Derby victory.
