Tip of the Day: Meet Up with Meetup

by Eubie on May 8, 2013

Being a loner can get lonely, and nothing takes the sting out of loneliness like people. Yes, we here at the HUB often reference Satre’s reference about hell being other people, but you can only make one set of footprints piggybacking the Cosmic Comic for so long before you just need to dig those toes in the sand and bump shoulders with a fellow weary traveler. Fret not, brothers, for there is a place you can go to find kindred spirits to stroll with along life’s aimless journey. It starts with a website, but that leads (hopefully) to actual human contact. That ethereal locale is Meetup, a web concept that’s new to us but may not be new to you: a clearinghouse for theme-based groups to list themselves, gather members, and advertise events. The site allows anyone to start a group and throw it out there to see if other likeminded surfers take the bait. For example, let’s say you have an interest in Japanimantion (manga or anime), go to Meetup, create a group and post it for your town, choose a random (or not-so-random) spot in your area (bars and restaurants seem to be popular) and a date for your first tete-a-tete (-a-tete), and then let the power of social media networking take over. Before you know it, you’ll have a hundred new friends with which to watch Adult Swim‘s Saturday night Toonami block of Japanese cartoons! Hai はい。!
