Tip of the Day: Power Down

by Eubie on June 28, 2013

If you haven’t heard, a big-brain tete-et-tete is going on this week in the ski resort town of Aspen, known as the 2013 Aspen Ideas Festival (June 26-July 2). The Atlantic is hosting a webpage devoted entirely to the AIF happenings (as is the festival’s website, to a lesser extent). Today’s tip comes from Arianna Huffington of the eponymously titled Huffington Post ‘news-and-views’ site, who is attending. Her tip is our tip: don’t take your e-toys to bed. There’s some scientific evidence that your TV, iPad, computer, night-light (?), all may be screwing with your brain in an effort to disrupt your sleep, and sleep is really, really important to your overall health and happiness. This is one of those rather simple suggestions that may be tougher to do than it seems at first glance, but if you get into the habit, you have a better shot at getting a good eight in the sack, REM included. We, on the other hand, tend to fall asleep in front of the TV, which is probably why every morning we look like a bag a dirt a bear peed on and feel like a bug on the space shuttle’s windshield. That is to say, we speak from experience when we say: Turn it off!
