Tip of the Day: Hit the Lip

by Eubie on January 20, 2014

Slide2.jpgTiaBlanco_AM7H3387There is a maneuver in surfing where the rider angles the board back into the crest of the wave at its zenith (the Lip), slaps (or, in reality, is slapped by) the cresting wave, which then aids the rider as he or she angles the board back into the flow of the wave and downward into the trough. Here is a website that describes how to do it in such a fashion that the layperson will have almost no idea how to accomplish a move that seemingly requires a kind of instinctual dexterity that the blessed are born with and we are cursed to have none of. All that is to say, the website will not teach you how to hit the lip. But we’re not selling ‘lip hitting’ as today’s tip, though we do recommend learning to surf and then going surfing today and any other day the waves are up. Rather, we want to encourage you to ‘think’ about this most artistic of surfing moves as it combines so many of the things that make this world a beautiful place. Here at the HUB, we liked the move (and the spirit it captures) so much we incorporated it into one of our UB logos. If you look closely, you should be able to see the UB ‘man’ torquing the board into the Lip. It’s a reminder that life can sometimes be gnarly, dude… and sometimes like totally tubular. Either way, ride.
