Tip of the Day: Apropos of Nothing

by Eubie on March 8, 2014

Okay, maybe not nothing… so something, but what? Hmm. Anyway, yesterday we served up a couple of links to a couple of videos, and today we’re doing the same. Why? This is where the ‘apropos of nothing’ comes in, or so we’re claiming. Mystery Train brought up memories of one of our favorite torch songs: Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), written by the unappreciated Sonny Bono, originally recorded in 1966 by his then-wife, Cher, but later perfected in rendition by Ol’ Blue Eyes’ daughter Nancy. We bookended this video with another of our favorites, Hurt (1994) a song by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and again rendered more memorably by the incomparable Johnny Cash in 2002. Both songs deal with the pain of loss and lost love. Played back-to-back, you can almost imagine Johnny and Nancy telling their sides of the same story: the man who left and the girl he left behind.
