Tip of the Day: ‘And… They’re Off!’

by Eubie on May 3, 2014

Today’s tip is simple and straightforward: go to the Kentucky Derby! Yes, this will be easier to accomplish if you are, in fact, in Louisville, Kentucky, but even if you aren’t, you can still watch it on TV, with a large group of drunken, gambling friends at your house (or theirs). What you’ll need is an ‘interesting’ hat, a list of the days races and entries (you’ll want to be betting the other races, too), and a mint julep. Mint julep, you say? Here’s a simple recipe:

1) Kentucky Bourbon (none of that Tennessee swill). Woodford Reserve is the official bourbon of the Derby, but we’ve always been slightly partial to Blanton’s or Knob Creek, though we admit that WR is dynamite!

2) Mint leaves (which really should be crushed in the bottom of the glass and then also used as a garnish)

3) Crushed ice (many like to add a couple of tablespoons of sugar, as opposed to the mint/simple syrup mixture… your call)

Oh, and here’s a more detailed explanation of how to make a mint julep from Louisville’s landmark Brown Hotel.
