Tip of the Day: Get ‘Rectify’-ed

by Eubie on June 19, 2014

Daniel_Holden_RectifyTonight, 9 p.m., is the season 2 premiere of the Sundance Channel’s first scripted TV series, Rectify. Not to wander too far afield but Sundance is owned by AMC, the boutique network that’s brought you two of the best shows in television history: Mad Men and Breaking Bad. (Some also have suggested AMC’s Walking Dead belongs with the others artistically, even as it’s surpassed those two in popularity.) Anyway, Rectify is, as the tagline says, the ‘best show you’re not watching.’ This neo-Southern Gothic series centers on a death row inmate freed from prison after almost 20 years and his reintroduction to the Georgia hamlet where he grew up. We’ll leave the research to you but you have to watch it. We are big fans for so many reasons but one in particular is the authenticity of the portrayal of life post-incarceration. It also gets at some of the crushing magnitude of what life is like on the inside. Beautifully written, gorgeously filmed, helmed by an outstanding Emmy-ready cast of not-very-well-knowns (for now at least), this show speaks a truth–presents a real ‘reality’–rarely if ever seen on scripted TV. The first season consists of six one-hour episodes, so you still have time to get caught up before the folks from Paulie return.
